Towing industry reform approved in WA

The Towing Services Bill 2024 has been passed by WA government to reform the state’s towing industry.

 

The Western Australia state parliament has passed the Towing Services Bill 2024 to “rebuild the reputation of WA’s crash towing industry”.

 

As part of the new legislation, spotter fees that are advertised, offered or paid to members of the community for reporting a crash are now banned with penalties up to $45,000.

 

Prices of standard towing and storage of crashed light vehicles in Perth and Peel will also soon be capped by new regulations.

 

These new regulations will also require charges for all other crash towing and storage across the state are to be reasonable.

 

Increased penalties are also set to be introduced for towing service providers and workers who breach the requirement of the Authority to Tow form or behave unacceptable.

 

“The passing of the Towing Services Bill means the Cook government can now rebuild the reputation of WA’s crash towing industry – making it safe, fair, efficient and affordable for the people of WA,” Minister assisting the Minister for Transport David Michael says.

 

“The public should be aware of the immediate ban on spotter fees, which means the towing industry cannot advertise or offer spotter fees to the community.

 

“It is also an offence for members of the public to receive spotter fees.”
