Beloved Lexington Facebook group creator killed while repossessing car

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - WIS heard from the mother and daughter of a Lexington County man who investigators said was killed early Wednesday morning while repossessing a car.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department has accused 20-year-old Raheem DeAngelo Jackson of killing Steve Hughes.

Jackson is charged with murder and possession of a firearm during a violent crime.

Hughes was loved by his family and the Lexington County community.

He was well known his involvement in community Facebook groups, particularly the one called “Happenings in Lexington, South Carolina,” that’s garnered over 46,000 followers.

He welcomed community members to post concerns, politics, events and resources. Hughes also shared details about his personal life with the group and recently asked the community for prayers when his brother passed away.

The incident report from the Richland County Sheriffs Department said a deputy responded to a shots fired call just after midnight Wednesday on Fairmont Road in Columbia.

According to that report, the first deputy arrived to find a tow truck with lights flashing and the drivers’ side door open with bullet holes and Hughes inside.

He was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds, where he later died.

His daughter, Stephanie Hughes, tells me there will never be another person like her dad. She came to know him dad just in the last few years.

”I have regrets of not being able to know him as much as I could. But, you know, you always think you have more time until you don’t,” she said.

Stephanie Hughes described her dad as supportive, encouraging, and above all funny. She said he often encouraged her to repo just like him and was always ready to lend a helping hand.

Steve’s mother, Monica Hughes, has experienced the loss of her two other children. Steve is now the third.

As Monica reflected on his life, she told WIS News Hughes loved his job. Even though she often worried about his safety, he never did.

She said nothing will compare to the day she found out about his death.

“I haven’t cried for years and years and years, but then I did,” she said. “So, I didn’t know, I couldn’t even think, nothing. You know, it was just horrible.”

Stephanie Hughes told WIS she will never understand her father’s death.

“Someone my age was capable of doing this, when I found that out, the emotions that came over me, it was incomprehensible,” she said.

Monica Hughes said she doesn’t understand why someone would take another person’s life over the repossession of a car.

She said she will do everything she can to ensure Jackson serves the maximum time if convicted.

Despite this, the two plan to carry Steve Hughes’ memory with them always.

“He was one of a kind though, there will never be another him,” Stephanie Hughes said.

Jackson will appear in Richland County General Sessions Court for a bond hearing. A date for his bond has yet not been set.

This certainly is a sad occurrence with the rise in violence against tow operators. Christine and I send our prayers to Steven Hughes' family in their loss.

In this month's American Towman Magazine, I covered the issue of "Repo Dangers" as a means understand and learn to avoid violent confrontations.

If you're a tower who conducts PPI's or repos, read the article on AT's on-line magazine, pages 40 through 45.

Remember ... everyone is on edge these days and violence has become a way of life. As I have 180-incidents of fatal violence against towers and repo agents dating back to 1934, I remind you that no matter what your level of macho is, keep in mind that NO vehicle is worth being killed over .. . there always will be another one.
